GENERAL INFORMATION
Scaldis’ largest heavy-lift vessel, the Rambiz, is unique in the world, with her two cranes and shallow draft. This arrangement, together with other qualities, gives the vessel the capability to operate in areas no other comparable vessel can reach. Her ability to work in both deep and very shallow waters provides valuable flexibility. The combination of two deck cranes enables the Rambiz to lift unusual structures that would otherwise require two separate vessels.
Civil construction works include the following activities:
- Construction and dismantling of large structures e.g. bridge
- Installation and decommissioning of equipment e.g. harbour cranes
- Transport, lifting and placing tunnel elements and caissons
- Lock door lifting and installations
- Concrete barrage constructions
BRIDGES & TUNNEL WORKS
Bridge installation at the Vasco da Gama Bridge, Lisbon, Portugal
Scaldis has been involved in various bridge installation and decommissioning projects in the past. The most remarkable project of these was the Vasco da Gama Bridge, with a total length of 13 km; The heavy-lifting programme for the bridge construction called for the positioning of 150 girders in all, each one 80 x 16 m in size and weighing up to 2,200 tonnes.
Today’s civil industry projects are not limited to new constructions and new facilities.
Thanks to increased environmental awareness, the removal, dismantling and recycling of facilities is becoming an increasingly-important consideration for this sector.

OTHER PROJECTS
Installation Mooring Dolphins – Adriatic LNG Project
Scaldis carried out the installation of two Mooring Dolphins belonging to the Adriatic LNG terminal in October 2008. As a subcontractor for Aker Solutions, Scaldis installed the two Mooring Dolphins on the East and the West side of the LNG terminal for the LNG tankers to moor
The Mooring Dolphins were built in the Arsenale Dock in Venice, and subsequently towed to the newly installed offshore LNG terminal site. The Heavy Lift Crane Vessel Rambiz was waiting in the field to receive the concrete structures for installation.
Mooring Dolphins
Key data:
L = 56.4 m
B = 28.4 m
Height caisson = 6.9 m
Height to deck = 38.6 m
1 m skirts
Towing draft = 6.91 m incl. skirts
Dry weight = 10000 tonnes
The Rambiz connected the mooring dolphin to both cranes for a simultaneous lifting & ballasting operation. The Rambiz ensured stability of the 10.000t structure, while the Mooring Dolphin was ballasted down to the seabed, by keeping a load of 1200t in her cranes. The Mooring Dolphins were set down at a water depth of 28m and within centimeters of the target location. The operations went smoothly and efficiently.
